Question about Connection Between The Cosby Show and A Different World
I want to raise a concern that I had about the following sentence (Although A Different World would remain a spin-off of The Cosby Show, Denise's absence severed any connections between the two shows apart from the fact that Hillman is her father's alma mater), as I do not believe that it is entirely accurate. I do not believe that all of the connections were severed between the two shows as Charmaine Brown, who appeared on The Cosby Show as Pam Tucker's best friend, would become a regular on A Different World. I do not believe you need to bring this part up in the article as Charmaine is not directly relevant to the character, but I think this part (severed any connections between the two shows apart from the fact that Hillman is her father's alma mater) needs to be reworded as I think it is too strong given that Charmaine's prominent appearance on both shows establishes another connection aside from Denise and Dr. Huxtable. A lot of great work has been done to this article, and I hope that this comment is somewhat helpful. I apologize if this comes across as too critical. Aoba47 (talk) 16:06, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for bringing this up, I actually had similar concerns myself. Although the source actually states that Denise's departure severed ties between the two shows, I think the author meant for this to be interpreted one of two ways: Denise dropping out of Hillman removed any connection apart from Hillman being Cliff's college for the time being until other characters from The Cosby Show began making appearances a few seasons later, or Denise dropping out severed ties between A Different World and the immediate Huxtable family (Charmaine is Pam's friend and was never part of the main Cosby cast, if I remember correctly). However, this is tricky because although it may have very well been implied by the source the author doesn't actually explicitly state this, and my interpretation could be deemed "original research". Ultimately, the best thing might be to remove the quote altogether (it probably won't be missed), but I'll leave it for now and see if I can reword it in any way to be a little more accurately, or find an alternative source. You weren't being too critical at all, just common sense.--Changedforbetter (talk) 18:33, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response. And I see your point as Charmaine was never a part of the main Cosby cast and was more of a recurring role so I could see her connection between the two shows being perceived as more minor in comparison to how Denise was used as a bridge between the two programs. I mostly just wanted to make a note about this to encourage to discuss if it is ever brought up for GAN or anything like. I think leaving it for now is fine as it can definitely be something to return to in the future. Aoba47 (talk) 19:35, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I revised the section to read "Although A Different World would remain a spin-off of The Cosby Show, Denise's absence severed connections between the two shows apart from the fact that Hillman is her father's alma mater during its early seasons." Thoughts?--Changedforbetter (talk) 19:34, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
